Issue: Windows 7 unable to connect to RDP

Symptoms / Error

  • Fully updated windows 7 with RDP 8.1 unable to connect to RDP server 2019. 

  • Error: "Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because an error occured on the remote computer that you want to connect to. Contact your network administrator for assistance."

Cause

  • LM Compatibility level set to a value less than 3. 

Fix

  • Open registry to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

  • Edit or add LmCompatibilityLevel to a vaule of 3 or greater.

  • Level 3: Clients use only NTLMv2 authentication, and they use NTLMv2 session security if the server supports it. Domain controllers accept LM, NTLM, and NTLMv2 authentication.

  • Reboot does not seem to be required although the documentation does call for a reboot.
